southern chefs potluck
This fundraising dinner is Wholesome Wave Georgia’s premier annual event, featuring highly-acclaimed local chefs serving up exemplary Southern-style cuisine. The event benefits Wholesome Wave Georgia’s programming, which focuses on healthy, local, and fresh food access for food-insecure Georgians.
Specifically, WWG’s core programs offer SNAP benefit assistance, SNAP doubling at farmers markets, plant starts in the spring for SNAP recipients, and a unique “prescription” education program working with healthcare providers.
I have drawn and designed the materials for the Southern Chef Potluck in 2022 and 2023. New for 2023: a collaboration beer between WWG and Piedmont Brewery! It's a "Georgia on my Mind" pale ale, "bursting with stone fruit, peach, and citrus aromas". My drawing is inspired by the song, locally-grown food, and the WWG Southern Chefs Potluck. The typeface is my handwriting. Photo credit and gratitude to Piedmont Brewery.
I was honored to be asked to draw and design 2022’s branding and logo for the Southern Chefs Potluck. I was inspired by the delicate line art of 19th-century printed illustrations, as well as crops that grow well in the South. The cabbage, a cousin to collards, is the main visual focus and serves to reference the plate imagery of past Potluck graphics. It’s paired with flowers and leaves of the okra plant. Okra is significant in Southern foodways not just for how it is used in dishes but also for its African heritage and trans-Atlantic slave trade history. The pollinator bee adds both visual balance and eye-catching asymmetry.
In addition to the logo and related graphics, I designed the sponsorship materials to be presented to potential donors.
